Arts and Crafts in the Digital Age

January 15th, 2009 by Chris · 1 Comment

Kari loves to draw, play with clay, put stickers on the dog and other various arts & crafts that most 3 year olds enjoy.  She’s also very interested in my DS and PSP, but isn’t quite old enough to grasp the challenges of even the simple platformers.

But now, thanks to the groovy dudes over at Ratloop  Kari and I can share our mutual interest in crafts and video games, all in the same virtual world.

Developed by Lucas Pope and Keiko Ishizaka and entered into the Independent Game Festival, Mighter allows for some very unique interaction with digital space.  The premise is fairly simple, play as the Actionaut  and collect the Datagons to complete the level.  The fun comes when you have to solve the puzzles by drawing on paper.  Yep, you print the puzzles, scan in your solution, then play the level!

I must say that this is addictive as heck! I haven’t had a chance to use the printed sheet webcam approach, but the game has a built-in draw screen that serves the purpose. I thought that I’d try it for a few minutes and two hours later I had to force myself to stop!

I really like the learning curve of this title. It gradually introduces different variables so that your not overwhelmed and you don’t feel like the gameplay is redundant. Very nice indeed. Oh, and FREE never hurts a gaming parent in this economy!
